Tourist

What this is for

A dashboard for a walk, a ride or a trip: speed, altitude, direction, coordinates, steps, weather and more, each on a tile. One tile is shown large at the top, the rest wait below, and buttons let you open a map, share where you are or call for help.

In this order

  1. If a card at the top asks for a permission 1, press its button 2. Speed, altitude, coordinates and sun times need location; steps need physical activity.
  2. The large tile 3 shows one reading, speed to begin with. Tap any tile in the grid 14 to bring it up to the top; the app remembers your choice.
  3. Read the value 5. Some tiles add a picture: the coordinates 6, a compass rose 7, an arrow 8 or a level bubble 9. The line below 13 gives the context.
  4. Trip tiles keep adding up as you move. Reset 4 on the large tile, or Reset trip 17, starts them again from zero.
  5. Map 15 shows where you are in a map app, and Share 16 sends your position to someone.
  6. SOS signal 18 opens the emergency signal. The Stopwatch tile has its own keys: Start / Stop 10, Reset 11 and Open stopwatch 12. The Counter tile opens the counter when you tap it.

The elements

Permission card

1Permission requiredAppears when a permission is missing and says what stops working without it.

Location is asked first: without it speed, altitude, coordinates and sun times cannot be shown. When location is granted but physical activity is not, the card asks for that instead and says steps are not counted. The card disappears once nothing is missing, and comes back if you withdraw a permission later.

2Allow / Open settingsAsks the system for the permission, or opens the app settings if the system will not ask again.

The key says Allow while Android can still show the request. After you have declined it for good, the key says Open settings and takes you to the app page, where you can switch the permission on yourself. Location is requested as an exact and an approximate choice, so you may grant the approximate one; some tiles are then less precise.

The large tile

3Large tileThe tile you are looking at, shown big at the top.

It has an icon, a name, the reading and a line of detail. Speed is shown at first, and the app remembers the last tile you chose. Tapping the card itself does something only for two tiles: Coordinates copies them to the clipboard, and Counter opens the counter. On a tile whose sensor is missing the card says so, for example Sensor unavailable or Acquiring fix..

4ResetStarts the trip, or the step count, again from zero.

The key is shown only on the tiles that accumulate: Speed, Steps, Trip distance, Ascent, Time on trip, Moving time and Average speed. On Steps it resets only the steps; on the others it resets the whole trip (distance, top speed, ascent, times and average speed together). There is no question first.

Undo
The trip, or the steps, return to zero at once and cannot be restored.
5ReadingThe value of the tile in large digits, with its unit.

Units follow the unit system chosen in Settings, Metric or US, and switch when you change it. While a sensor is warming up, the reading says why instead of showing a number: Acquiring fix.., Collecting readings.., Waiting for the sensor.. or No data yet - needs a GPS fix and internet.

6Coordinates viewLatitude and longitude, shown instead of a single number.

It appears when the large tile is Coordinates and reads Lat and Lon with four decimals; before a fix it shows dashes. Tap the large card to copy the pair with five decimals; the copied text is shown for a moment. Share sends the same position.

7Compass roseA dial that turns as you turn, with the heading in degrees.

It appears when the large tile is Compass. The dial turns so that north stays north, the number is the heading in degrees and the word beside it the compass direction. The detail line says whether the reading is magnetic north or true north and warns when something near the phone, such as metal or electronics, disturbs the sensor.

8Direction arrowAn arrow that points the way a value is heading.

It shows on Course, where it points the way you are moving (start moving to see it), on Wind, and on Pressure, where the arrow tilts up, down or sideways for rising, falling or steady air pressure.

9Level bubbleA spirit level for the phone: the bubble floats to the high side.

It appears when the large tile is Level. Lay the phone flat and the bubble sits in the middle of the ring; a tilt of about 30 degrees pushes it to the edge. The detail line gives the pitch and roll in degrees.

10Start / StopStarts or stops the small stopwatch on this tile.

The Stopwatch tile is a simple stopwatch of its own: one person, no laps. The key says Start while it is stopped and Stop while it runs. The reading counts minutes and seconds. It keeps counting when you turn the phone.

11ResetSets the tile's stopwatch back to zero and stops it.

Use it between two measurements.

Undo
The time is lost at once and cannot be restored.
12Open stopwatchOpens the full Stopwatch program.

That program times up to four people with laps, music and a result you can send. The small stopwatch on this tile is separate and does not carry over.

13Detail lineA line under the reading that explains it.

It differs from tile to tile: for Speed the top speed and the trip distance, for Satellites how many are used and in view, for Sun / Daylight sunrise and sunset, for Level the pitch and roll, and so on. When the value is only a guess it says Approximate and what it is waiting for.

Other tiles

14Other tilesAll the other readings, in a grid of two columns; tap one to bring it to the top.

The grid lists every tile except the one at the top. Tiles whose hardware your phone lacks are left out, not shown empty. Trip and movement: Speed, Altitude, Steps, Trip distance, Ascent, Slope, Time on trip, Moving time, Average speed, Cadence and Course. Position and sensors: Compass, Coordinates, Satellites, GPS accuracy, Level, Light, Magnetic field, Pressure and Barometric altitude. Sun and weather: Sun / Daylight, Weather, Dew point, Wind, Feels like, Humidity, UV index, Chance of precipitation, Cloud cover and Visibility. Watch: Heart rate and Body temperature, in editions that pair with a watch. Tools: Stopwatch and Counter.

Steps and Cadence need a step counter and the physical activity permission, and Pressure and Barometric altitude need a barometer. The weather tiles need a GPS fix and an internet connection. The watch tiles show your watch's latest reading, or ask you to open Tourist on the watch.

Action buttons

15MapShows your position in a map app.

It hands your coordinates to the map app on the phone; with no map app installed it opens the map page in the browser. Without a fix yet, it opens the map app with no point, and if the phone has no map app, a short message says that the position is still being acquired.

16ShareSends your position to someone as a message with a map link.

It opens the system share sheet with your coordinates and a link to them on a map. Wait for a fix first; until then a message says the position is still being acquired. Whoever receives it learns where you are, so choose the recipient with care.

17Reset TripStarts the trip again from zero.

It clears the trip distance, top speed, ascent, time on trip, moving time and average speed together. When the large tile is Steps, it resets the step count instead. It works from any tile and does not ask first.

Undo
The trip returns to zero at once and the values cannot be restored.
18SOS signalOpens the SOS emergency signal.

It takes you to the SOS screen, where you choose a siren, a flashing light or both, and start the signal. It is here because this screen is where you already are when something goes wrong outdoors.
