All editions; the notification-shade flashlight and the water flashlight need a phone with a camera flash, the mirror a front camera

Built-in Programs - Switching Them On, the Lights, the Mirror and the SOS Signal

FastMediaSorter comes with a set of small programs you switch on only if you want them. This page shows where to switch them on, where to open them, and how to use the front flashlight, the water flashlight, the flashlight in the notification shade, the lit mirror and the SOS emergency signal.

Why You'll Love This

FastMediaSorter carries a few small programs of its own: a calculator, a stopwatch, a mirror, three kinds of flashlight, an SOS signal and more. None of them needs a separate app, and none of them is in your way - every one is off until you switch it on.

A dark stairwell, a quick look at your face before a video call, hands wet in the rain, a lost path in the mountains at dusk - that is what the lights, the mirror and the SOS signal on this page are for.

Before You Begin: Ingredients & Prerequisites
1

Switch on the programs you want

Open Settings, the Management tab, and find the group Additional programs and scenarios. Each program has its own switch, and each is off after installation:

  • Front flashlight - the screen itself becomes a lamp.
  • Water flashlight - the camera flash and the screen light together, and touch is locked.
  • Flashlight in the notification shade - a permanent entry in the shade that lights the camera flash.
  • Mirror - the front camera inside a bright field that lights your face. This one is on by default wherever the phone has a front camera.
  • SOS emergency signal - a loud Morse siren and a strobing light.
  • Calculator, Stopwatch and Mini-game - see The calculator and the stopwatch and The mini-game.
  • System information - the report about your device, see System information and the debug log.
  • Network Monitor, Tourist and Wear Companion - the connection check, the navigation dashboard and the watch window.

Switching a program off removes it from every menu, panel and widget list at once.

Open a program

A program you switched on appears in several places at once:

  • the programs menu, behind the three-dots button (More actions) in the command bar of the main screen;
  • the programs panel, a bar above the resource list that shows the same programs as buttons. Turn on Programs panel in Settings, General - the three-dots button then gives its place to the panel. The panel's own menu has Configure panel, Collapse panel and Hide panel;
  • the launcher desktop, in the Standard and noLegal editions - see Your launcher desktop;
  • for the front flashlight, the water flashlight and the stopwatch, a one-cell widget for your home screen - see FastMediaSorter widgets for your home screen.

Light up a room with the screen - Front flashlight

Open Front flashlight. The whole screen lights up at full brightness and becomes a lamp. The time is shown in black a quarter of the way down.

  • The large Light color button below the time picks another color - a warm yellow for reading, a red that keeps your eyes used to the dark. The color is remembered for next time.
  • The strip of five steps beside it sets the brightness. Swiping up or down anywhere moves through the same five steps.
  • A single tap anywhere closes the lamp.

Only the brightness of this window is raised. When the lamp closes, your phone is exactly as bright as it was before.

A light for wet hands - Water flashlight

A wet touch screen presses itself: rain or a shower can switch a normal flashlight off, or open something else. Water flashlight lights the camera flash and the screen at full brightness together, then locks the screen. Only the time and the reminder Locked. Use the buttons stay on it, and touching the glass does nothing at all.

  • To turn it off, press a volume button.
  • The notification shade and the navigation buttons are hidden and the screen is pinned, so water cannot pull the shade down or press Back.
  • If you leave by a system gesture, the light goes out too - it never stays burning in your pocket.

On a phone without a camera flash the lit screen is the light, and the lock still holds. This is not the water-lock mode some watches and phones have built in - no app can switch that one on.

The camera flash one tap away - Flashlight in the notification shade

Turn on Flashlight in the notification shade. A permanent entry appears in the shade: Tap to switch the light on. Tap it and the camera flash lights; the entry now says The light is on. Tap to switch it off.

It works with the app closed and over any home screen, and it comes back by itself after the phone restarts. If you switch the torch off from Android's own Quick Settings tile, the entry notices and shows the light as off. On Android 13 and later the app first asks for permission to show notifications - allow it, or there is no entry. Switching the setting off removes the entry and puts out a lit flash. Phones without a camera flash do not offer this switch at all.

Check your face - Mirror

Open Mirror. The front camera fills the screen inside a bright white field that lights your face, like the lamp around a make-up mirror. The picture is flipped the way a real mirror flips it.

  • The zoom buttons 1x, 2x, 3x and 5x sit in the lower left corner. The mirror opens at 3x.
  • Flip image in the corner turns the mirror flip off and on.
  • Backlight switches the bright field off and on without leaving the screen.
  • Take photo and Record video save a picture, or a video with sound, into the folder you chose for the in-app camera, or into the phone's own Camera folder if you chose none - see Taking photos, videos and voice notes straight into a folder.
  • Close mirror leaves it.

The zoom, the flip and the backlight are remembered for next time. Only this window gets brighter, never your phone's own brightness setting. On a device without a front camera the mirror says This device has no front camera, so the mirror cannot open. If camera capture is switched off in settings, the mirror is not offered.

Call for help - SOS emergency signal

Open SOS emergency signal from the programs menu, or tap SOS signal on the Tourist screen. Pick what it should do:

  • Sound and light - a loud siren and a strobing light together;
  • Sound only - for daylight, or when the light would blind someone;
  • Light only - for a quiet night, or to be seen from far away.

The signal repeats the Morse SOS pattern - three short, three long, three short. The siren plays on the alarm sound channel, so it is loud even when the ringer is silent. It rises and falls several times a second, so the ear cannot tune it out, and it carries further than a plain beep. The rear flash and the whole screen strobe in the same rhythm.

While it runs, a notification says Signal active with the mode. Tap Stop signal to end it. After 30 minutes it stops by itself, so the battery and the flash last.

With a paired watch (Standard and noLegal editions), starting the signal on the phone starts it on the watch in the same mode, and stopping either one stops both. If the watch is out of range, each device still signals on its own. On the watch the screen is locked against touch while it signals, and only a hardware button ends it - see Wrist programs, timers and tools.

What You Get

The programs you need sit one tap away in the programs menu, on the panel and on the home screen, and the ones you do not need stay out of sight. Your phone can be a lamp, a torch that water cannot switch off, a lit mirror and a loud distress beacon.
