Clouds: a shared box for your devices
A cloud account is the simplest way to share media between your devices when they are never on the same network: one device puts files in, another opens them. It works today, in every edition except Lite and FOSS - see Editions.
Which clouds
- Google Drive - signs in with your Google account.
- Dropbox - signs in through Dropbox.
- OneDrive - signs in with your Microsoft account.
Each cloud appears in FastMediaSorter as a resource next to the local folders and network folders, so copying, moving and sorting work the same way across all of them.
What else Google Drive carries
- Settings backup - one device backs up the app settings to Drive, and another device signed in to the same account restores them.
- App data - settings, favorites, pinned streams and resources travel between your devices as one file per kind in your Drive.
- The phone’s SFTP address - with Share access through Google Drive switched on, Drive keeps the current address of the phone’s SFTP server, so your other devices find it after a network change. See Exchange server.
When a cloud is the wrong choice
A cloud stores a copy of your files on someone else’s servers and costs upload time for large videos. To open media where it already lives - on a PC or a NAS at home - use the home network instead.
